February 2001

Thursday February 1st, 2001

Eek, February.

Went to see the first potential project supervisor today. His speciality is cataracts, in particular the possibility that analgesics like aspirin and neurofen may have preventative effects. Sounds interesting. It caught my eye (pun unintentional), because I spent my gap year working with Dr Joe Horwitz, who also works in this field. No responses from any of the other people I emailed, apart from one who says he's moving jobs and so won't be able to offer a project. :-(

Friday February 2nd, 2001

Hmm, nothing like an almost-finished essay to make you turn to updating your diary :-)

Eeek, birthday approaching. I suppose this means I have to decide if I want to organise a pub-food-meet for it, or something.

Monday February 5th, 2001

My useful act for today has been to start a Picture Of The Week gallery.

Thursday February 8th, 2001

My first entry written from a practical. And possibly my last, since I don't think there are any practicals next term.

Hmm, I wonder if I'll be able to keep up with producing one photo per week.

Tuesday February 13th, 2001

Well, I still seem to be keeping up with POTW. Today was the sunniest it's been in a while, so I went out and took some photos of it.

Wednesday February 21st, 2001

Last night was the Lincoln Chemists' black tie dinner. Food was provided by college and was very nice. Followed, of course, by college '77 port. Mmmmm.

Took a slightly more abstract photo today, inspired by one on Photo.net. I might have another shot at it using someone else's eye - it's unbelievably difficult to get the picture in focus when you're not behind the viewfinder.

So: stunt eyes wanted; apply to arthur[at]bullard.net

It looks like my project is just about sorted, and will probably be with my tutor from last year. Computer- and crystallography-related, but I don't know any more than that.

Music recommendation of the day:
And I watched as the tears ran through your fingers
Held your hands to your shining eyes and cried
"If you die," you said, "so do I" you said...
But it ends the day you see how it is
There is no always forever...just this...
The Cure -- "There Is No If"

Another new exhibit acquired for my Obsolete Computer Museum - a VAXStation 4000 VLC. It'll have to be picked up from Cambridge, though, so don't expect pics any time soon :-)
