January 2001After some prodding (thanks :-) ), here's January, before it's too late. I have a Thingy! Wednesday, January 17thI found out today from Tom Womack that Rob Farrow, my English and scholarship form teacher when I was at King's school, Cambridge in about 1992, died last October. He was a very good teacher, who left a strong impression on me, and I'm sure that I owe my place here at Oxford in part to his encouragements at that time. Thanks, Rob. The funeral speech written by Vivian Falk says more than I ever could here. Sunday, January 21stA really eerie night, tonight. A blanket of fog descended onto Oxford, and transformed ordinary streetlights into a ghostly gradient. So, of course, I went out and took some photos. The statue is outside the Radcliffe infirmary, and was taken on an earlier night, when temperatures were well below freezing. Monday, January 22ndHad Lincoln hall & wine tonight, with Kake. She said the vegetarian option, stuffed fennel, was really good. Then, we went back to my room for a spot of Fauré's requiem. I'm still on a quest for a recording of it which is a) an all-male choir (sorry, a female Pie Jesu is just wrong), and b) organ-only accompaniment - that is, no orchestra. Tuesday, January 23rdHad a bit of a prod at my Embryonic Obsolete Computer Museum, which is slowly accumulating exhibits... - but I'm still on the lookout for a PowerBook 100, and any more old calculators :-) Music recommendations: anything by Mazzy Star (thanks Christian!), Alpinestar's album, B.A.S.I.C. Oh, and Fauré's requiem :-) Thursday, January 25thAs pointed out by Socks, Microsoft Word's grammar checker objects to the phrase "For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread." on the grounds of a "Number agreement" - see screenshot. Friday, January 26thWent to see the Nutcracker performed by the St Petersburg Ballet co. with Alistair and some people from his lab, at the Apollo. I'd never been to a ballet before, so I found it a slightly surreal experience. But I enjoyed it a lot!. |
